HAYWARD'S TRIPLE LIFTS THE WILD TO VICTORY
Canadian Wild take finale and series against the Peppers
Marion, IL (July 25, 2019) – The Canadian Wild of Southern Illinois clinched a series win against the Aussie Peppers of Minnesota with a 4-1 victory in the finale on Thursday night from Rent One Park.
The Peppers opened the scoring in the first, Leigh Godfrey singled to open the inning and then Rachel Lack reached on an error by the Pitcher, Karissa Hovinga. After Chelsea Forkin popped out, Jade Wall flew out for the second out, but got the ball deep enough that Godfrey was able to score from third.
The Wild scored all of the runs they'd need for the victory the bottom of the fourth. After Shiane Brannan ground out to begin the inning, the Wild got four straight hits to score all four of their runs in the game. Larissa Franklin hit one on a line to right field, followed by a single from Kaleigh Rafter that put runners on second and third. Franklin then scrambled home when Joey Lye bounced a single to the pitcher. Victoria Hayward got in on the action next, with a two-run triple after the Pepper's center fielder misjudged her line drive. Kelsey Jenkins finished off the scoring with a sacrifice fly that scored Hayward from third.
Hayward went two for four at the plate with a single to go along with her game-winning triple, and was named RIP-IT Player of the Game in the contest.
It was a combined pitching effort for the Wild tonight, with four pitchers stepping up to help lock down the win. Karissa Hovinga started the game and went two innings while allowing one run on one hit. Next up was Morgan Rackel, who stepped up in the third allowed two hits, but kept the Peppers off the board. Kenzie Friesen took her turn in the fourth and retired the Peppers in order. Danielle Lawrie closed out the game for the wild, going three innings, with no runs on two hits and three strikeouts.
The Wild finish regular season action with a final series against the Cleveland Comets starting on Saturday at 6pm CT. Saturdays contest goes from Southern Illinois University's Charlotte West Stadium, while games two, three and four will be back at Rent One Park.
