Wild Drop Game One Against Peppers
The Aussie Peppers come from behind to walk-off the Canadian Wild
Mankato, MN (July 3, 2019) – The Canadian Wild of Southern Illinois dropped the first game of five against the Aussie Peppers of Minnesota 6-5 on Wednesday night from Caswell Park.
The night started out well for the Wild, with an offensive outburst in the third inning that put them up 5-0. Jennifer Gilbert got the scoring started for the Wild when she came up to bat with the bases loaded and smacked a single up the middle, scoring three. Holly Speers followed her up with a two-run shot to center field to finish off the five-run inning for the Wild.
That lead held up until the sixth, when a lead-off single by Stacey McManus followed by a walk from Stacey Porter came around to score when Carmelle Sorensen reached base on a fielding error by Joey Lye.
The Wild still looked in control of the game, holding a 5-2 lead heading to the bottom of the seventh, but couldn't close out the three-run lead as the Peppers stormed from behind to tie the game before they walked it off with a two-out single from Michelle Cox with the bases loaded.
Making her sixth start of the season and her third in six games, Groenewegen had another strong start for the Wild. She pitched into the sixth inning before being pulled for Karissa Hovinga. This marks the third game in a row that she has pitched that deep.
Game two of the five-game series between the two teams goes tomorrow from Caswell Park at 7:05pm CT.
