Gilbert's Homer Powers Wild to Win
Canadian Wild take game one of a five game set with Comets
Avon, OH (Jun 12, 2019) – The Canadian Wild made it 10 wins on the season as they topped the Cleveland Comets 4-1 on Wednesday night at Sprenger Stadium.
The Wild took the lead in the third thanks to a single from Victoria Hayward that scored Larissa Franklin after she led off the inning with a double and was advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt from Kaleigh Rafter.
Later that inning Jennifer Gilbert came to the plate, and blasted a home run-her second of the season-to left field, scoring Hayward from third and putting the Wild up 3-1. That ended up being the winning hit in the game, and Gilbert earned Park Planet Player of the Game honors for the second time this season.
The Comets got a run back in the next half inning. After reaching base on a fielder's choice, Sammy Marshall stole second, and advanced to third on a throwing error. Emily Carosone hit a deep fly that was put caught by Victoria Hayward in left center, but was deep enough to score Marshall from third to get the Comets on the board.
The Wild would add another run of their own in the top of the fifth thanks to Jennifer Salling, who singled Hayward home from second to make it 4-1, which would hold up as the final score of the game.
The Comets pressed to find the tying runs, but the Wild pitching and defence held strong and was able to hold them to just the one on the night.
Karissa Hovinga got the start in this one, and went five innings, allowing five hits, and one run with no walks and struck out three. Danielle Lawrie replaced her in the top of the sixth, and had a dominant two inning appearance in relief, striking out three of the six batters she faced without allowing a hit or a walk.
The Wild and Comets are right back at it tomorrow, with game two of the five-game series going tomorrow at 7:05pm ET/6:05pm CT.
