JENKINS' HOMER POWERS THE WILD PAST THE EAGLES
Canadian Wild make it five in a row against Beijing
Daytona Beach, FL (May 31, 2019) – Kelsey Jenkins home run provided all the offence the Canadian Wild of Southern Illinois needed as they topped the Beijing Shougang Eagles 3-1 on Friday night in the fifth game of the six game set between the two teams.
With Gilbert on second after a single and a steal, Jenkins, the Park Planet Player of The Game for tonight's contest blasted her first home run of the season over the center field fence in the fourth for the 2-0 lead.
The offence was hard to come by for either side, and it wasn't until the seventh that the Wild were able to push across their third run of the contest. With Gilbert on third after leading off the inning with a double and taking third on a ground out, Holly Speers doubled her home with a shot down the right field line. The Eagles got their only run in the seventh on a dropped third strike, but the Wild held firm and were able to close out the game without further damage.
Larissa Hovinga had a strong outing for the Wild, pitching five full innings with one strikeout while only allowing one hit, a leadoff single in the fourth. Sara Groenewegen made her first appearance of the season when she came in to start the sixth. She faced eight batters in relief, allowing one hitting and striking out three.
The Wild look to complete the sweep in the series finale tomorrow night at 6 p.m. ET/5 p.m. from Jackie Robinson Park.
