Two RBs from Gilbert & Salling Help Wild Stay Perfect
Canadian Wild take both halves of their doubleheader with Beijing
Daytona, FL (May 30, 2019) – The Canadian Wild of Southern Illinois secured a series win as they took both games of their doubleheader with the Beijing Shougang Eagles on Thursday at Jackie Robinson Ballpark, holding on in the seventh to take game one 7-6 before shutting out the Eagles 1-0 in game 2.
In the first contest, The Wild jumped out to an early lead with four runs in the first. With runners on second and third, Jennifer Salling singled up the middle to plate the first run of the game. Jennifer Gilbert followed that with a single of her own to plate two more. Gilbert put the Wild up 4-0 on a wild pitch.
The Wild kept the pressure on in the second. Victoria Hayward doubled for her second hit of the game, scoring Natalie Wideman from second. Salling got her second hit and RBI of the game to score Hayward two batter later.
The Eagles broke the shutout in the fourth, plating a lead-off double. They kept the pressure on in the fifth, scoring three runs and cutting the lead to two.
Erika Polidori got one of those runs back when she doubled to center field in the sixth, scoring Franklin. That run turned out to be the difference in the game. The Eagles scored two more in the seventh, eventually falling 7-6.
Game two was a much tighter affair, with the Wild eking out a 1-0 win on an RBI single from Jennifer Gilbert in the fifth.
Jenna Caira was superb in the circle once again, hurling five innings of one hit shutout ball while striking out four. She was replaced by Morgan Rackel, who held the line for the Wild to close out the game, striking out two and only allowing one hit.
The Wild look to stay perfect on the season in the penultimate game of their six game series against the Eagles at 6:35 p.m. ET.
